SAP HANA is based on in-memory technology that enables data to be analyzed in a matter of seconds. The software is designed for use in organizations that handle large volumes of data, for example in the retail sector. However, Uwe Bornhorst, COO of SAP partner itelligence, can imagine that SAP HANA will have its followers in the midmarket, too. SAP HANA can also be deployed with new technologies and media forms such as augmented reality – see the articles Merging Worlds: Augmented Reality and Business in Two Worlds.
At CeBIT 2011, SAP devoted an hour-long discussion to the topic of SAP HANA. Jacob Klein, vice president and SAP HANA project lead at SAP, stressed that SAP HANA is simply the first in a row of applications making use of in-memory technology. There are no plans for it to replace SAP’s other business intelligence offerings, such as SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse.
SAP has not yet outlined what the payment models for SAP HANA will look like nor how much the software will cost. The product is still in ramp-up, more information on pricing will be available when SAP HANA goes into general availability.
