In an interview with SMB NEWS, Rainer von Ammon, Professor of Software Engineering and Distributed Systems at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, explains that, although the principle of reusable services is not new as such, it is now within the reach of midmarket companies for the first time thanks to cross-platform standards. This simplifies the integration of heterogeneous IT landscapes, improves business processes, and increases flexibility and thus ultimately the company’s future viability.

Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Outlook, is the number one productivity software in use by businesses and individuals today. Think about how much time you spend there doing the “basics” – reading and sending e-mails, adding contacts, checking your calendars, and updating tasks. And then you go into your business management software and update customer and contact information, check on the status of a quotation, contract or service order or run a sales report. You may even look for sticky notes and reminders written on your boarding passes or in your PDA and double-check that everything’s up-to-date.

Companies whose applications are based on older releases of SAP R/3 should not put off upgrading. A wait-and-see attitude entails higher maintenance costs and jeopardizes market competitiveness.
