Reports that dozens of journalists and Internet essayists have been jailed in China underscores the need for “human rights software” – technology that allows people to use the web without being detected. SAP INFO online spoke to Ronald Deibert who is associate professor of political science at the University of Toronto and the director of the Citizen Lab at the Munk Centre for International Studies. He is the principal investigator of the psiphon censorship project, which is a human rights software developed by the Citizen Lab. It allows citizens in restrictive countries to gain uncensored Internet access through friends and family members’ home computers.
