The world’s largest computer fair, CeBIT, was kicked-off Hollywood-style this year. California was the partner state of CeBIT 2009, and the state’s governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, had the opportunity to follow German chancellor Angela Merkel on her traditional CeBIT tour. During their visit to the SAP booth, they and various other politicians, such as German minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, watched a demonstration of the SoKNOS disaster management system.

September 11 saw the launch of the Queensland node of the Cooperative Research Centre on Smart Services (Smart Services CRC). SAP is the largest industry contributor to the Centre, investing 12 million Australian dollars (almost seven million euros) over seven years. Lutz Heuser, vice president of SAP Research, was a special guest at the launch.

The Internet is rapidly becoming an “Internet of Services.” The service sector already employs more people in Germany than any other, and many companies are growing strongly with new, web-based business models. Software-as-a-service is just one example.
